Become an EPA Certified Renovation Firm

Please follow the steps below and start the process today:

Step 1: Where will you be working? Unless you plan to work only in one of these states (AL, DE, GA, IA, KS, MA, MS, NC, OK, OR, RI, UT, WA or WI) goto Step 2.  If you will be working in one of the states listed, follow the link provided above and apply directly to that state program.

Step 2: Get your firm certified or recertified. Submit an application and fee to EPA (apply online for quickest processing).

  • APPLY FOR CERTIFICATION OR RECERTIFICATION ONLINE. If you're using the system for the first time, you'll be required to complete a brief registration process prior to completing the application. When applying for recertification you’ll need your firm’s certification number.  The certification number is located on the lower left corner of your firm’s certificate, you can also lookup your certification number here, or for additional assistance contact our hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD(5323). When applying for recertification, be sure to select “recertification” on the application.  This way your new certification begins when your old one expires, so you’re not penalized for applying early. You can also submit your application and fee by mail. Download the application and follow the instructions to apply by mail.

Step 3: Employees must be trained. Make sure your employees are trained in and use Lead-Safe Work Practices. Each firm must have at least one certified renovator.

  • Renovators are certified upon completion of an EPA accredited renovator training course (their course completion certificate serves as their certification credential).  The initial training is 8 hours in length, and the certification is good for 5 years from the date of course completion.  To maintain their certification a renovator must complete a refresher training course prior to the expiration of their current certification (either the 4 hour refresher or 8 hour initial training course can be used for this purpose).  If their certification expires the 8 hour course must be taken again to regain their certification.  Find an RRP training class or provider in your area.

Step 4: Download your personalized logo. Once you receive your EPA Lead-Safe Firm Certification in the mail and logo instructions in your e-mail, feel free to use the logo on your advertising materials.

  • Read the Lead-Safe certified logo use guidelines
